I was first introduced to Monument Valley as a child through the visual images of such films as Stagecoach, Fort Apache and The Searchers, where director John Ford and actor John Wayne first brought Monument Valley to the attention of the rest of the world. The scenery in these films captured the romanticism of the Old West. It is what ultimately drew me to live in the desert Southwest.

In spite of many years of romanticizing about the spectacular desert scenery, and the colorful buttes and mesas that make up Monument Valley that I had seen in the classic western movies of my youth, I was certainly not disappointed upon my first (and subsequent) visits there. It was everything it appeared to be in the movies and more. It is, for lack of a better term, a true "monument" to the American spirit.

The photographs in this photo tour were taken in May of 2005. They highlight the many features that make Monument Valley so special. Related links for Monument Valley are listed near the bottom of this page.
